There are two types of groups which exist at Lancaster University; they are Clubs and Societies. The clubs belong to the Athletic Union and their primary aim is to compete for Lancaster University in the national inter-University competition (BUCS). Societies are where students with similar recreational interests can come together and share in their common interest. The majority of new groups each year are societies as it is more difficult to facilitate a new club due to resource restrictions and the sports BUCS offers.
Create a New Club
If you are interested in setting up a new Athletic Union Club then contact the VP Activities officer (ku.ca.retsacnalnull@seitivitca.pv.usul) and book a meeting to discuss your ideas.
Create a New Society
There is a huge range of societies to join at Lancaster, a list of which can be seen here. However, if you’ve had a look and nothing is catching your eye, why not set up your own group? There’s just a few documents to complete, and it’s a very easy process!
It is usually a good idea to discuss your new society with the Societies & Events Coordinator before applying so that there is a better chance of your application being successful; to book an appointment contact James Marenghi
Every new society proposal must be complete with the following forms:
(Please see the New Society Guidance Notes)
Forms can be submitted any time but Activities Exec (assessing body for new groups) considers applications several times a term (week 4 and every week after until the end of term). The deadlines are therefore end of week 3 and end of each week following this.
Once an application has been sent in it will be put forward to the next new group application meeting. The executive of the new group will be invited to attend part of the meeting and present their new group to the activities exec; this is to give the exec a better understanding of your group and gives you and the exec the opportunity to ask questions. There is no need to prepare a long presentation; each group is only expected to spend a couple of minutes presenting their group.
The executive of the new group is then asked to leave the meeting and a vote is taken by the executive. You will be notified of the decision within a week of the meeting; if the group is turned down reasons will be given and the group can re-apply once they have resolved the issues.
